Remember that moment in acclaimed documentary film Beerfest, when our heroes had to chug from "Das Boot?" The enormous glass boot was filled with beer (and had a troublesome air pocket in the toe).
With Oktoberfest still so many months away and Easter right around the corner, the time seems right for a different—but no less absurd—form of holiday binge-drinking from a giant vessel.
We therefore humbly present Das Bunny: A larger-than-life chocolate bunny filled with similarly delicious libations, and—like some kind of Easter-themed scorpion bowl—designed for sharing. Or not. We spent a downright questionable amount of work time perfecting this recipe, so Das Bunny is not just on-theme, but an indulgent yet balanced cocktail.
• Hollow chocolate bunny
• Milk chocolate chips
• 4 parts chocolate liqueur (we used Godiva)
• 4 parts salted caramel vodka (we used Smirnoff)
• 2 parts half & half
• 1 part hazelnut liqueur (we used Frangelico)
First and foremost, your bunny needs to be watertight. Plug any holes by melting down chocolate chips in a dry, heatproof bowl and microwaving for 30-second bursts, stirring between each increment. Use a spoon or a piping bag to fill in any holes. Refrigerate the bunny overnight, as well as all cocktail ingredients.
In a large pitcher, combine the chocolate liqueur, vodka, half & half, and hazelnut liqueur. Mix well and set aside.
Gently lay the bunny on its side, and carefully slice off the very top of its ears, leaving a large enough opening to pour in the cocktail.
Stand the bunny on a rimmed plate (just in case), give your cocktail another good stir, and pour it into the bunny. A funnel may help here. If you hear sizzling, don't panic! It's not a leak; it's just the alcohol reacting with the chocolate.
Enjoy with friends and a bunch of extra long straws. Not into the communal drink thing? Get several medium-sized bunnies or a bunch of small ones, lop off the ears, and use them as individual "glasses" using the same method above.
